What To Know For Planting Vegetables In Pots And Containers
If you're low on backyard garden space, planting vegetables in pots or containers on your balcony or patio is a great option. All you need is a sunny spot, something with around 8 hours of good sunlight per day. This is one of the great advantages of gardening in containers. You can adapt it to any space you have, and decorate your area with containers that are bright, subdued, rustic, or whatever your style.
For the containers themselves, almost anything will do. That empty milk or water jug? Yep, cut off the top and tap some drainage holes in the bottom. That old plastic bucket will work too. Even plastic bags with soil in them will work, if you hang them on something. You can get creative here, since you'll be decorating a small space. The important part is to make sure that there is proper drainage, so be sure to drill holes in the bottoms of your containers. Roots can easily rot if submerged in water too long.
Don't use any sort of treated wood, if you're building your own container. The chemicals designed to keep termites and harsh weather from harming the wood can leach into the soil and then into your plants and food.
For the soil, a nutritious potting soil blend will work. After all, you're planting in pots. These soils already have some fertilizer and nutrients in them, so your plants will get a healthy start. Of course, when the time comes, you will need to replenish the nutrients in the soil with fertilizer or compost, but that's later.
For the seeds and seedlings, you may want to start them indoors. This affords them more control over the temperature and lighting. You are free to move them about in the best sun spot for them, and the temperature indoors is much more constant, meaning the soil is typically warmer than outside, which is helpful for germinating. After they poke out of the soil, keep them in the starter containers for a few weeks, then transplant them to the pots.
One of the best vegetable choices for containers are the miniature varieties of plants. They don't take up much space, so a modest container will work. You can also go for herbs or some small leafy greens.
