Is Scott's Liquid Gold Wood Polish ok to clean and protect an Electric Guitar?
Answer:
Depends on the type of finish.
According to the Scott's website, Liquid Gold Wood Polish is good for natural finishes such as Varnish, shellac and lacquer finishes used on wood. Polyurethane is not a natural finish. Polyurethanes do not survive well in contact with most organic solvents. Scott's Liquid Gold is an organic oil formula that contains and organic solvent.
Since most new factory made instruments have a poly finish, I would not recommend using it if your guitar has a poly finish.
At any rate, whatever polish you do use, should not contain silicone (which coincidentally, Scott's does not contain silicone). Polishes that contain silicone leave a residue that's very hard to remove. If your guitar ever needs a repair, the silicone will prevent glue or finish from adhering, making even simple repairs more difficult and costly.
I use some polishes by StewMac, Redland, but others I've spoken to like Dunlop Formula 65 which is more readily available in stores.
