Frequently Asked Questions...
What nut should I put on my guitar?
I have the option of these 3:
Tusq
Graphtech
Floyd
which one should I get
Answer:
Hello there,
The only Tusq nuts I have ever seen are made by Graphtech. The Graphtech nut and the Tusq nut are the same thing. Some sellers call them Graphtech and others call them Tusq. Those are self lubricating graphite nuts. I like them because they do not have to be lubed with graphite (it is built into the nut). Those help with tuning stabilty. The string is less likely to hang up in the slot.
Floyd nut? The only nuts that I know of that are Floyd nuts are the locking nuts to be used with a Floyd Rose tremolo. The Floyd Rose tremolo locks at the saddle and at the nut to get its tuning stability. You only use a locking nut with a locking tremolo like a Floyd Rose or a Kahler.
If you have a locking tremolo, you need a locking nut. If you do not have a locking tremolo, do not put a locking nut on your guitar.
You do have other choices. Many guitars use a plastic nut. It is cheap. Bone and horn nuts are a better choice, but usually do not come preslotted. Those have to be hand fitted to your guitar. Brass is an option but again it has to be fitted to your guitar. Synthetic bone sometimes comes preslotted. That is what Fender uses on many of its guitars.
