Frequently Asked Questions...
What's the difference between medium and light acoustic guitar strings?
I need some new strings for my guitar. I really don't know much at all about guitar apparel. does medium and light make different sounds? and is there a "heavy" type of string? If they do make different sounds, I'm looking for something that will make more of a crisp, clean sound. (I finger pick)
Answer:
The most noticeable difference will be how they feel on your guitar neck.
Light strings: will be lower to the neck. easier to bend. not as loud.
Medium strings: will be tighter and higher.
Heavy strings will be much higher and tighter (harder to play).

The volume difference is not very noticable, but it does exist.

Soundproofing Guide: What Acoustic Materials You Need
New Document
When you listen to music in your studio, sound is the very soul of it. There are many soundproofing materials present in the market but they offer balanced resonance at the most. The main aim of acoustical treatment is that it removes problems that arise due to hard parallel surfaces, and thus it stops the entry and exit of unwanted sound. So what are the factors that determine the acoustic behavior of a studio? Below are a few pointers which will help you.
If you possess Ayre Acoustics home theatre, YG Acoustics Theater or Esoteric Audio system, then it is important that you insulate the space in order to minimize noise entry. Primarily you should go for sound isolation. In this, a sound barrier is created between your studio and the adjoining areas. The main goal is to eliminate the possibility of unwanted noise to either escape or enter your studio. Usually heavy materials are used so as to block the noise. Decoupling devices are also used to reduce any structural vibrations. Some experts use sound absorbing materials within the wall cavities. This helps in reducing unnecessary structural resonance.
The next step is to reduce sound or noise so as to enhance the quality of sound. This is done by reducing echo or any reverberation. If you use the sound absorbing materials in a well planned manner, it can considerably improve the sound quality. Many people believe that sound absorbers are like sound proofing materials. But this is untrue and the absorbers shouldn’t be used to block any sound.
Sound diffusion is yet another aspect that works hand in hand with sound absorption. Diffusers are designed in a way so that they are able to diffuse sound evenly throughout the room. They also help in preventing dead spots or places where you cannot hear sound clearly.
In acoustical treatment, sound absorption is significant. Sound energy tends to get absorbed when it hits any surface or it gets converted to another form of energy. Most of the time, it gets converted to heat energy but the amount of heat generated is much less. So if you have absorbing material, they help in absorbing medium to high frequencies.
In the case where sound is not absorbed, it is reflected back. Sound reflection may produce echo or reverberation. When sound is equally distributed in the space, it is said to be diffused well. Diffusion process overtakes any dead spots. You can achieve better diffusion by interchanging the sound reflecting and sound absorbing surfaces. In general, a concave surface tends to focus sound, while convex surfaces tend to spread it.
What kind of sound system will you choose for your home theater? For good sound quality, try to choose wall absorbers. Use large diffusers at the end of the room. You can even use foam and rock wool, but they are not going to help in acoustics treatment.
There is an increased trend to sound proof the house for enhanced sound quality, in which acoustics treatment plays an important role.
