Frequently Asked Questions...
Guitarists: How Do TV Jones Super'Trons compare with PAF Humbuckers?
I'm a jazz and blues guitarists who does a lot of fingerstyle. Some folks say it's like Chet Atkins, but I have no great love for Chet (just repsect) - more like Joe Pass, Tuck Anress, Jorma Kaukonen, and rockabilly guys like Setzer. I love the PAF sound on the jazz that I do, and I have a 57 classic PAF humbucker in one guitar which sounds great. In this new gretsch I got, I tried a 57 classic again and it doesn't seem to work. Poor sustain, kinda muddy. Wanted a cleaner sound but something that would still be able to pull off that magical PAF sound that guys like Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, and others seem to have. I saw the TV Jones Super'trons and wondered if they compare favorably for jazz with PAF humbuckers. Are they able to really sound jazzy or just country/ rockabilly? Would they work in this gretsch? Thanks for any advice!
Answer:
Gretsch's are great guitars but have a very different sound and vibe from traditional jazz boxes that the well know jazz players use, just take a look at the folks who play Gretsch's, it's mostly country and rockabilly guys.
If you like the sound of the 57 Classic's and want to sound like Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell why don't you go for a similar guitar.
On the high end price wise, is Gibson ES-175, L5, Super400, etc
On the mid end take a look at Heritage Guitars, there is a Kenny Burrell signature model which is really nice. Also look at Eastman and Peerless guitars
On the low end price wise are The Epiphone 'Joe Pass' signature model, Ibanez Artcore's, Washburn J5, J6, J600, Aria Pro II's FA-70's, Samick Greg Bennett JZ4, etc
