Toyota and Lexus Floor Mat Danger
Toyota has recently commenced its largest recall ever with over four million Toyota and Lexus cars and trucks with possible safety issues. Last autumn the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NTHSA) received numerous reports that driver’s side floor mats were dislocating and making the accelerator pedal stick The issue got public interest when a highway patrol officer and his family died. His Lexus struck another car and then hit an embankment after traveling above 120mph as a result of a jammed gas pedal. It seems that the vehicle couldn't be stopped by the brakes alone. Toyota responded by issuing a safety alert recommending that Lexus and Toyota owners take out the floor mats on the driver's side and not replace them until Toyota could study the trouble further. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration also strongly urged vehicle owners to remove mats or any other obstacles that could cause the car to accelerate. Here are the models with potential safety risks:
• 2007 – 2010 Toyota Tundra
• 2005 – 2010 Toyota Tacoma
• 2004 – 2009 Toyota Prius
• 2007 – 2010 Toyota Camry
• 2005 – 2010 Toyota Avalon
• 2007 – 2010 Lexus ES350
• 2006 – 2010 Lexus IS250 and IS350
Toyota and Lexus service technicians have undergone training and are now equipped to make the necessary modifications to these cars and trucks. Although it would seem to be an effortless repair; just replace the defective floor mats with a more efficient design, the safety of their vehicles is a top priority to Toyota. Therefore, technicians will actually reshape the gas pedal and in some models will also install a brake override system. An accelerator pedal replacement part will be available beginning in April 2010. Toyota has started sending out recall letters asking car owners to bring their vehicles in for repair and they expect their service departments to be flooded. To help combat the inconvenience many Toyota Dealerships are offering rental cars to customers affected by the recall.
