Before Buying Your First Guitar: Some Advice Before You Go To The Guitar Store
Is $100 enough for a beginner's guitar?
When you buy your first guitar, you should know that they are sold for as little as $70. And even less, if you get a used one. And there is practically no limit at the other end of the wallet. Recently I read about a Gibson that costs $20.000 - a bargain! The day after they practically gave away a Martin D50. It didn't cost more than $39.999!
So take your pick. It doesn't really matter if you buy a cheap guitar or an expensive one. It works very well to practice on a cheap guitar. But maybe you should leave the most cheap guitars where they are, if you're not sure of their quality. This because you need a guitar that stays in tune all over the neck. And that is a problem with a lot of the cheapest guitars.
So maybe you should at least start at $250-300 for a classical guitar. A little more for a western style guitar.
A classical guitar or a steel-string acoustic?
Or....wait. You can always get an electric guitar? "Don't even think of it!" says Mr Know-All. Again - you are the judge here. Of course, if you want to study classic guitar the choice is a nylon stringed guitar. But in most cases it is a question of taste. What sound do you like? Make your choice from that.
A classical guitar produces a smoother sound than the western guitars. They are also not so mean on your fingertips. On the other hand they have a neck which is wider than the steel-string guitar. If you have very small hands it could mean trouble.
As hinted before, you can buy the electric guitar to learn on. "Buy a real guitar!" is often what I hear from besserwissers. But the electric guitar is not less of a "real" guitar. Its strings are even easier to press down than the nylon strings. The downside is that this is more expensive for you. The electric guitar isn't much fun without an amplifier. And make sure the strings are good quality - it is slightly more difficult to tune an electric guitar, and with no-good strings it's even harder to make the guitar sound good.
Conclusion
So - the short version of this article would be; As long as the guitar is of decent quality, buy the guitar you want to buy, based upon your likings, style.....and maybe your hands size.
