Frequently Asked Questions...
What type of guitar adjustment do I need and how do I do it?
I bought this 70's acoustic Epiphone Texan guitar and it needs the action fixed. I saw stuff about messing with the nut to lower the strings but that isn't the problem. My problem is that it is basically normal at the lower frets but the strings get higher as you get up and you can't play once you get to the 7th fret or so. I also saw stuff about messing with the truss rod. What type of adjustment is this called? How do I do it myself?
Answer:
you need to adjust the truss rod because the neck is not straight. Thats why the strings are higher at the top of the neck (near the body of the guitar) than at the bottom of the neck (near the tuners.)
Before you do this, restring with brand new strings. Old strings exert more tension on the neck so you want to do the adjustment with new strings to make it right.
Don't adjust the truss rod more than a quarter turn; if that does not fix things, take the instrument to a professional luthier.
you need a special wrench if you can't get at the truss rod adjuster with something like a long-handled socket.
If I were you, I'd just take it to a guitar shop and get a "basic setup" for about $35 + cost of strings. It'll be done right, no scratches or other damage, and you can just enjoy the guitar,.
