What are signs of a capo that is damaged?
My capo has little grooves all over the part that clamps the strings, and it sounds pretty crappy. Can a capo go bad? What are the signs of a damaged capo?
Answer:
I've never had a capo go bad, but I don't use them much. It's pretty basic: if the grooves in the pad get so deep that they aren't pressing the strings, then the strings will sound muted or might buzz. It's normal to see some small grooves, and in my opinion capos never sound as good as open strings. If you can pluck a string with the capo on and it sounds the same as if you were pressing the same fret with your finger, then it's doing it's job.
Many capos pull the strings a bit out of tune when you clamp them on. You have to be careful of this when you hook the capo on, but some designs are better than others. Also, if your strings are high or your intonation is off, it will be more noticeable with a capo. You may have to re-tune after putting the capo on.
