Freelance Writers: How to Avoid Trouble with Paid Gigs through Craigslist
If you are a freelance writer, you may have considered using Craigslist.org to find paying projects and clients. Visit any message board for freelance writers like yourself and most people will tell you that this is a bad idea. They claim you will only run into frauds who will take your work or people who pay too little for your work. Of course, there is always the risk of running into these people when finding paid writing projects on Craigslist, but there are steps you can take to lessen the risk.
How To Prevent Work Without Pay
In this case, you do the work, email the person your files, and you never hear from them again. Basically, they stole your articles because you didn’t get paid. Prevent this from happening by:
Requesting all or a part of payment upfront: Now, this option doesn’t fly well with some people looking to hire writers. See, they are taking a gamble on you too. Yes, you may have good samples, but that doesn’t mean you can write great article for them. My best advice is to ask for a percentage of the payment upfront and the rest after the entire project is completed. This approach is less intimidating. After all, how does a legitimate company or person know you won’t just take their money and run?
Start out with small projects: So, you find a person on Craigslist who needs you to write 100 articles. If you charge the rate of $10 per article, that is $1,000. Right there is a lot of time, money, and articles to lose if your client up and disappears. Why not suggest getting started with only 10 articles? You can make sure the client pays this time, which can provide reassurance that they will keep on paying.
How to Avoid Low Paying Work
The thing about freelance writing is that there is no set pay scale. Some writers wouldn’t be caught dead writing for the above mentioned $10 an article and others have no problem going even lower to put food on the table. You need to do what is best for you. If you want to take low paying projects, go right ahead. However, if you want to avoid low paying work, just don’t apply. Most people on Craigslist say how much they are willing to pay for an article, press release, or blog post. If so, just bypass any low paying gigs. If the rate isn’t disclosed ask, but move on if it is too low for you.
As you can see, there are ways to avoid the warnings that freelance writers often hear about Craigslist. Basically, you just need to use your best judgment.
Freelance writers have a unique opportunity; they can live in California and write for a person based out of Florida. For that reason, all locations on Craigslist should be searched with a Craigslist search tool.
