HOW TO AVOID MENSWEAR MAYHEM – SOME COMMON FASHION DISASTERS
We’d all notice a guy if he waltzed into the party with a lime green jacket that looks like it’s been slept in, orange cropped pants, a fedora on his coiffed head and a tight lace vest with a deep V-neck – but would we gasp in admiration at his impeccable fashion sense? No. Whilst individuality and flair are traits to be treasured, nobody is above making a fashion faux pas – and heads will be turning for the wrong reasons.
To avoid being the laughing stock of the party, here are some men’s fashion mistakes to avoid.
1. You can be too big for your boots...but your clothes mustn’t be too big for you. Clothes that are too loose don’t only make you look silly but they’re also a menswear no-no. You don’t have to go for the formal wear tailored look every time, but you do have to look as though your clothes actually fit you.
2. The too-tight look. The snug-fit is a look that should be reserved for the home gym. Even Mr Universe has off-days, so rather leave people guessing about the state of your muscles and cover-up with a decent outfit.
3. Don’t even think about pairing a short-sleeved shirt with a tie. This is only OK if you work in McDonalds, but if you’re after a stylish formalwear look, it’s got to be a long-sleeved shirt with a tie.
4. Socks and sandals. European tourists used to be tolerated wearing this combo, but not even they can’t get away with it these days.
5. Don’t join the chain gang. If you’re clinking and jangling along with multiple chains, rings and bracelets...then maybe you belong in the clink.
6. Keep the promotional gear and novelty clothing for gardening. It’s OK to wear your corporate freebie or your Disneyworld T-shirt if you’re watching the football at home, but not if you’re watching your boss give his annual presentation.
7. Too-short trousers are men’s wear mayhem. When you are standing up, the fabric should just fold slightly when it hits the top of the shoe... and if you show some skin above your socks when you’re sitting with your legs crossed...you need to invest in some longer pants.
8. Don’t ever do up the last button on your cardigan, jacket or mens suits.
9. Creased or crumpled clothing should stay in the laundry. Haute couture models strutting along the catwalks of Paris may get away with a wrinkled and edgy outfit, but the unlaundered look for ordinary men’s wear is a big turn-off.
